The City of Racine and Visit Racine County established the Special Event Grant Fund to help fund events and projects that will bring in visitors from outside of the local area who are likely to stay overnight in an area lodging property. The fund utilizes 10% of the total room tax collected by the City of Racine, which is anticipated to be about $20,000.

The application is available below or at the Racine County Visitor Center, located at 14015 Washington Ave, Sturtevant, WI 53177. All applications must be received by Visit Racine County by 12 p.m. on Friday, January 10, 2025. They can be emailed to Cari Greving or mailed/dropped off at the Visitor Center. All applications will be reviewed and the grants will be announced by the end of January.

The program accepts applications from non-profit 501c-3 or 501c6 organizations for the marketing of events and projects which will occur within the City of Racine. They must be open to the general public, non-political in nature and be held in a venue that is ADA accessible. Conventions and exhibitions, as a component of a convention, and business meetings, are not eligible for funding. Organizations that were grant recipients in the past may apply, but preference will be given to first time applicants. We are especially looking for events which will seek to promote Racine’s culture, and specifically promote the lifestyle of our residents. Elements that shape our way of life such as the history of the area, our art, architecture, religion(s), recreation, sports or health/fitness will be considered for funding.

The grant is to be used for marketing the event or project outside of the Racine metropolitan area. This is a matching grant fund, which means that the organization must at a minimum match dollar-for-dollar the amount awarded. This can be done either “in-kind” or by cash. The “ideal” event will be a first time event, held over multiple days in the non-summer months that is likely to attract hundreds of overnight visitors from outside of the area that fill hotel rooms.

Tourism generated $525 million in total economic impact in 2023 in Racine County, contributing to Wisconsin tourism’s historic year!

[Racine County, WI] (June 11, 2024) – The Wisconsin Department of Tourism released 2023 economic impact data, showing the tourism industry generated a record-breaking $25 billion in total economic impact. The 2023 economic impact surpassed the previous statewide record of $23.7 billion set in 2022, marking back-to-back record years for the Wisconsin tourism industry. Racine County played a pivotal role by contributing $525 million in total economic impact.

Additionally, last year, Racine County tourism supported 3,660 part-time and full-time jobs across various sectors of the industry and generated $28.1 million in local tax revenue. Statewide, tourism generated $1.6 billion in state and local tax revenue in 2023. Without this revenue, each Wisconsin household would pay an additional $660 to maintain the current level of government services. Racine County’s Direct Visitor Spending increased 9% in 2022, bringing in $299 million to the County.

“It is always a great day for tourism in Racine County but today is extraordinary! With the release of the new 2023 data, we are certain that the changes we have been making in the past year are entirely worth it. We are attracting more visitors than ever before and the data doesn’t lie. We can thank new and improved advertising campaigns, targeted to audiences that have never visited here before. We can thank the exciting events that each of our municipalities put on all year long. And we can thank the desire to constantly promote each of our extraordinary attractions. But those are not the real reasons for this success. The collaboration and partnerships between our hospitality industry and individual communities is the driver. Working closely together over the past couple years has produced incredible results. I hope every hotel, attraction, restaurant, bar and venue feels the same pride we do today. The visitors are coming here, having a great experience, and then coming back again!” says Cari Greving, Executive Director of Visit Racine County.

In 2023, Wisconsin welcomed 113 million visits, nearly 2 million more than the previous year. This includes 45.9 million overnight visits, the second consecutive year of record-breaking overnight visitation. Overnight visitors, on average, spent almost three times as much as day trippers. View the 2023 economic impact data including a county-by-county breakdown.

“Wisconsin tourism powers the economy and strengthens the fabric of communities of all sizes,” said Wisconsin Department of Tourism Secretary Anne Sayers. “The historic impact of tourism reached every corner of Wisconsin and, in doing so, sustained livelihoods for thousands of our friends and neighbors.”

“I am eternally grateful to work with the communities in Racine County every day. Without this incredible collaboration, tourism would not succeed here in the way that it does. Mount Pleasant, the City of Racine, Caledonia, Sturtevant, Wind Point, Waterford, Yorkville and Burlington and all their local efforts help us spotlight their unique and special quality of life. This has been the sole focus of our marketing campaigns this year and the response by travelers has been overwhelming. I fully expect another jump in tourism for 2024! Extra thanks go to the Mount Pleasant Tourism Commission and Matt Prochaska, Kelly Kruse at Downtown Racine Corporation, the Explore Waterford team, and MT Boyle and the Burlington Chamber. We are stronger together and our visitors are feeling welcomed throughout the entire County.”

Being in the heart of the Midwest, Racine County has an abundance of fresh, locally grown produce at hand. Check out the list of our local markets and independent roadside stands for that fresh farm-to-table feel.

Tips While at a Farm Stand or Farmers Market

  • Do not visit a farm stand or farmer’s market if you are sick, such as having a cough or fever, or a member of a high-risk group.
  • Don’t touch any items you haven’t purchased and minimize money handling. Allow farmers to serve you when possible.
  • Thank your farmer! These are especially challenging times for our farmers, food makers and restaurants as they work hard to feed us. We must invest in and strengthen our region’s farms and food supply.

“Wright before the Lloyd,” is a special exhibit at the Racine Heritage Museum. It highlights the young Frank L. Wright and his friend, Cecil Sherman Corwin, the forgotten architect and mentor who did much to shape him into the architect we know as Frank Lloyd Wright.

Wright wasn’t always Frank Lloyd Wright. In his youthful years of architectural practice at the end of the 19th Century, he was very different from the brash, self-confident public celebrity who several decades later gave Racine its landmark S.C. Johnson & Son campus. Born Frank Lincoln Wright, the young architect signed his works prosaically as “Frank L. Wright.”

He had arrived in Chicago in late 1886 as an inexperienced and self-doubting nineteen-year-old aspiring architect. He was warmly welcomed into employment with the office of architect Joseph Lyman Silsbee by Corwin, the firm’s chief draftsman. Both Corwin and Wright were sons of  much-traveled ministers. Corwin’s father, the Rev. Eli Corwin, was the popular pastor of Racine’s First Presbyterian Church from 1880 to 1888.

Corwin and Wright quickly discovered they had much in common, including similar passions for architecture, culture and music. They became inseparable friends. They shared ideas in their practice of architecture for 10 years. For many years, they shared a small office in downtown Chicago. Each had projects and clients of their own, but critiques and comments were freely shared. In later years, Wright often recalled his appreciation for the guidance, confidences and camaraderie Corwin provided in guiding his personal life, and shaping the professional identity that later gave him fame. In An Autobiography (1932) Wright wrote that he had found “a kindred spirit” when he met Corwin.

The exhibit is curated by Tim Samuelson, the City of Chicago’s Cultural Historian Emeritus. It is comprised of his extensive collection of early Wright architectural salvage, drawings and images, The exhibit, on the museum’s main floor center and north galleries, runs through December 30, 2024.

Sponsors of the exhibit are the Arch W. Shaw Foundation, Racine Community Foundation, WE Energies Foundation and the Racine Arts Council.

The museum is located at 701 Main Street in Racine, Wisconsin. Museum hours are: Tuesday-Friday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., and Sunday 12-4 p.m.  Admission is free. Donations are appreciated. The museum, built as a Carnegie Library in 1904, is a historically preserved building and is not ADA accessible. For more information, call the museum at (262) 636-3296 or visit their website.

Established in 2017, the Frank Lloyd Wright Trail takes visitors to nine Wright-designed buildings across southern Wisconsin, all open to the public. The trail is a partnership of the Wisconsin Department of Tourism and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, and is marked by specially designed signage.

Born in Wisconsin’s Driftless Region, Wright (1867-1959) spent his boyhood summers working his uncle’s farm in Spring Green and eventually built his famous home and studio a mile away. He is widely regarded as America’s greatest architect and the originator of organic architecture, which focuses on harmonizing design with nature and people.

The Frank Lloyd Wright Trail runs through Racine County on a 200-mile, self-guided architectural adventure.

Wright in Racine

In Racine County, visitors may tour the SC Johnson Administration Building and Research Tower at 1525 Howe Street in Racine. Tours are free, but reservations are required.

The SC Johnson Administration Building, the household products manufacturer’s global headquarters, was completed in 1939. It features The Great Workroom, a large open space supported by a series of unique, concrete columns. The Research Tower, which opened in 1950, is constructed on the cantilever principle off a center core. Its outer walls are alternating bands of brickwork and glass tubing.

The 90-minute tours of the SC Johnson Administration Building and Research Tower include the Foster + Partners-designed Fortaleza Hall that houses the SC Johnson Gallery: At Home With Frank Lloyd Wright and the Lily Pad gift shop featuring SC Johnson memorabilia and Wright-inspired merchandise. The tour begins at the Golden Rondelle Theater, which served as the Johnson Pavilion at the 1964-1965 New York World’s Fair, and ends at Waxbird Commons, a state-of-the-art facility that opened in 2021.

At the Golden Rondelle Theater, the documentary film “Carnauba: A Son’s Memoir” is shown Sundays at 1 p.m. and the Academy Award-winning film “To Be Alive!” is shown Saturdays at 1:30 p.m. Tour and film reservations are required.

Wright in Wind Point

In northern Racine County, visitors may tour Wingspread at 33 E 4 Mile Road in Wind Point. One of the largest Wright-designed private homes at 14,000 square feet, Wingspread was designed for H.F. Johnson and family. Located on a 36-acre wooded tract, it is now an international retreat and executive conference facility operated by the Johnson Foundation of Wingspread. The tour highlights remarkable features such as the home’s disappearing dining table, its teepee-inspired clerestory ceiling in the great room, and the cantilevered “Romeo and Juliet” balcony bedroom. The one-hour tour is free, but reservations are required.
